Weekend Guide: From Boston's Ukrainian Fest To Natick's Cat Show

BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) -  Pretty soon the calendar will read September, but before New England becomes an Autumnal Mecca for leaf-peepers, apple cider donut lovers, and all things pumpkin spice, summer is still holding on strong.

Unfortunately there's another round of rain on the way Friday into Saturday, with the sun peaking back through the clouds Saturday evening. Thankfully Sunday looks like it'll be a beauty.

FRIDAY AUG. 25

Annual Great Feast of the Holy Ghost in Fall River (Aug. 23 – Aug. 28)

Getting underway this past Wednesday, the Great Feast of the Holy Ghost has returned to Fall River. It’s one of the largest Azorean celebrations in the world.

On Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. There will be a blessing and distribution of the “Pensões,” followed by musical performances by Tyler Bowe and Luis Neves Show.

Saturday kicks off the annual parade of the “Bodo de Leite,” which will travel through Columbia and South Main Streets, towards Kennedy Park. From 2:00 p.m. to 11: p.m. there will be festivities at the park, including musical performances and traditional food.

And finally on Sunday, the community will celebrate with a Solemn Mass of the Crowing at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, followed by a crowning procession, concert and an auction at Kennedy Park.

Duck Derby Day At Allens Pond

On your mark, get set, go! Grab your favorite rubber ducky and head to the "epic" race from Buzzards Bay into Allens Pond. The winner will take home $5,000 but not to worry, there are prizes to go around including Mass Audubon family memberships and even a "Slacker Quaker" award to the 'loser.'

Free Entry to the Cape Cod Museum of Art

All the free family fun comes to the Cape Cod Museum of Art on Friday. The museum will offer a number of activities from ballooning, kitemaking and crafts, painting, yoga and meditation (for kids) and free museum tours.

Cummington Fair (Aug. 24 – Aug. 27)

This year marks 155 years since the first Cummington Fair, and this year will offer sometime for everyone. Antique engine shows, riders, demolition derbies and live music will all congregate at the Cummington Fairgrounds. 

Middlesex County 4H (Aug. 25 – Aug. 27)

If you’re looking for the classic New England fair experience, look no further than the Middlesex County 4-H Fair. With a focus on youngsters and their agricultural projects, the fair is a perfect experience for the whole family.

Ware Grange Fair (Aug. 24 – Aug. 27)

With a book fair and agricultural fair, the annual Ware Grange gives local residents a change to put their hard work on display. What’s more, there will be a Chicken BBQ Dinner on Saturday night, $25 will get you all the fixings, but reservations are required.

SATURDAY AUG. 26

Natick Multicultural Day

Natick celebrates it's annual Multicultural Day on the town's Common. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. attendees will be dazzled by a number of cultural booths offering everything from food, to arts and crafts, clothing, music and information.

Boston Annual Ukrainian Festival

Celebrating the rich culture and heritage of Ukraine, Boston will become a sea of Blue and Yellow this Saturday for the annual Ukrainian Festival. Last year, more than 3,000 people attended and this year organizers are expecting the same.,

The festival also serves as a platform to support Ukraine in it’s on-going struggle for freedom and on-going Russian Invasion. At Saturday’s celebration there will also be a number of organizations raising money for Ukrainians and providing information on the situation on the ground.

The Aht Depahtment Presents: The Summer Village Art & Music Festival

Showcasing local artists and musicians, the Kinross Community Center holds it’s annual Summer Village Art and Music festival.

Natick Cat Show (Sat. Aug. 26 – Sun. Aug. 27)

All the cool cats will be heading to the Verve Hotel Boston Natick this weekend for “A Purr-fect 10: the 10th Cat Fanciers’ Association Allbreed & Household Pet Cat Show.” Running both Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. there will be contests galore, including the Cat and owner Costume Contest on Sunday.

Boston’s Only Triathlon Returns Sat Aug. 26th - Sun. Aug. 27th

Athletes from all around the globe will describe on Carson Beach this weekend for the 15th annual race. The kid’s day race will take place on Saturday, what’s more, it’s free to all youngsters who’d like to take part.

The main race kicks off Sunday, with more than 20,000 racers expected, from 300 Massachusetts towns, all 50 states, and 36 different countries.

SUNDAY AUG. 27

India Day at Needham Town Hall

The Needham community is celebrating India Day this Sunday at Powers Hall inside Needham's town hall. There will be face painting, henna, balloon making, and even a fashion show. Aside from the entertainment, there will be cultural food galore, so you'll want to bring your appetite for sure.

“Restival” in New Bedford

Sundays are meant to be a day of rest, and in New Bedford, they’re taking that quite literally with the “Restival,” a festival dedicated to practicing rest. There will of course be free yoga classes, meditation, sound healing, Reiki, a labyrinth garden and even places to take a nap.

Annual Armenian Picnic in Haverhill

The Armenian Apostolic Church at Hye Pointe is hosting the annual picnic on Sunday. With a menu of lamb shish, losh and chicken kebab, kheyma, jingalov hats, and a vegetarian option, this event has us watering at the mouth.

Spellman Stamp Museum is FREE This Sunday

The Spellman museum of stamps and postal history is waiving admission fees this Saturday as part of the state-wide “August Adventure” initiative.

“We have a fun and memorable day planned, with our partners from Noble Spirit serving as experts in an ‘Antique Roadshow’ style format – bring your stamps and coins for us to assess.” The Museum said.

National Cinema Day

Are you one of the few who has yet to see ‘Barbie’ or ‘Oppenheimer’ or perhaps you’re ready to see them again, either way, $4 movie tickets will hit the box office on Sunday in celebration of National Cinema Day.
