IPSWICH, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Ipswich police are investigating after a major crash on High Street Thursday evening.

Police were called to 300 High Street around 5:10 p.m. for reports of a two car crash. When officers arrived, they discovered two cars had collided head on. A Subaru driven by a woman from Maine, with two passengers and a Hyundai driven by a man from Rowley with his teenager as a passenger.

The preliminary investigation leads officers to believe one of the vehicles crossed the center line and hit the other. Both vehicles suffered major damage, the Subaru smashed up against a wall, while the Hyundai rolled over.

The driver and one of the passengers in the Subaru were rescued using the Jaws of Life and taken to a Boston hospital by helicopter. The injuries are serious but the pair is expected to be okay. Three others were taken to the hospital with injuries.

“The police officers, firefighters and paramedics did an awesome job working together,” Chief Paul Nikas said. “Their quick work helped patients get the medical care they needed as soon as possible.”

The investigation continues.
