BROOKLINE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Brookline is teaching people to dance via murals on the sidewalk.
The new murals at Coolidge Corner depict colorful footsteps that, when followed correctly, create a dance. The sidewalk art was organized by the town and painted by artist Kit Collins.
One of the murals attempts to teach a ballet combination, created by Caitlyn Kwan.
“Having people with all kinds of experiences attempt and try this brings it to life,” Kwan said.
Kwan teaches ballet at the Brookline Senior Center. She created the dance, called “The Mat That Seats Many” by combining her Hawaiian roots and her experiences in the Boston area.
She dedicated the dance to her seniors, saying the dance is “just an amalgamation of the different communities that supported me and that I wanted to pay tribute to.”
Kwan said the dances are a way to encourage the community to try new things.
“I hope to inspire a feeling of empowerment,” Kwan said. ‘That ‘Oh [I] can try this ballet combo, let me try something else I’ve been meaning to try in life.’”
