BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu says Boston's City Hall Plaza will finally reopen to the public next Friday, November 18. The new plaza will have space for a total of up to 25,000 people.

Work started on the new-and-improved plaza in July 2020 under the Walsh Administration, and has been going on throughout the pandemic.

The new design was spearheaded by Watertown-based design firm Sasaki, and will be greener in two senses: new water-permeable surfaces that soak up rain from storms, and the inclusion of 100 new trees to line the plaza among many other changes.

Improving accessibility was a key goal of the project. The $70 million renovations include the Hanover Promenade, connecting Congress and Cambridge Streets.

Boston will be holding a ribbon-cutting event with the mayor next Friday, between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
