BOSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — If you find yourself on the Bowker Overpass in the Fenway-Kenmore area, it's likely you've noticed the construction.
"We have a couple of projects planned," MassDOT State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said. "One that we're currently in now is an $84 million project that's going to rebuild and widen the overpass, and it's going to add a lot of other amenities to it as well. We have a pretty significant amount of work we've been doing."
Construction began last summer and is slated to end in the Winter of 2029. The project will be completed through seven different phases; they're currently in the second phase of development.
The project plans to introduce a multimodal Charlesgate Bridge with bike lanes and a shared-use path along with improvements to the greenway and Emerald Necklace networks. Over 100 trees, 150 shrubs, and 3,500 perennials and ferns will be planted in the area.
Gulliver said they've been working with advocacy groups to meet everyone's needs.
Though the project is a long way from being complete, Gulliver is looking ahead at some of the changes.
"There's going to be redesigned traffic patterns on Boylston Street [and] on that intersection with the actual overpass. We're [also] doing a removal and relocation of one of the offramps over the Muddy River to Charlesgate West."
