EVERETT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As the workers’ strike at Encore Boston Harbor nears the 50-day mark, new state data shows casino goers may not be crossing the picket line.
Gaming revenue fell 22% when compared to September of last year— falling from $59.1 million down to $46.1 million, according to data from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
Kathy Woodard, a striking employee who works in Encore’s public areas department, said she considers that a win.
“This is incredible, and what we’re doing is working,” Woodard said. That’s a big number for a loss.”
Encore employees are advocating for better pay, guaranteed preservation of healthcare and benefits and job security. Woodard said employees will strike through the holidays if they need to.
“We’re strong and we’re going to hang out here in solidarity.” Woodard said. “The communities around us have supported us [unbelievably], and I thank them.”
The impact of the strike is expected to be discussed during Thursday's gaming commission meeting. Encore has not responded to WBZ NewsRadio’s request for comment.
