AMESBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Sen. Scott Brown is making a comeback — not to politics, but to the basketball court. He's Amesbury High School's new girls basketball coach.

The former Republican senator made a name for himself on the court at Tufts University, long before his improbable 2010 U.S. Senate win against Martha Coakley. He was known there as "Downtown Scotty Brown" for his jump-shot presence. Now, he's returned to do something that he considers on his "bucket list."

"I would say I'm a student of the game, and it's really about giving back to the communities that you love and the sport that you love, and trying to make a difference," Brown told WBZ NewsRadio's Drew Moholland.

This isn't the first time Brown is getting on the court as a coach: he turned the Rye, New Hampshire Junior High team around, going for an undefeated run last year.

"Politics really had nothing to do with it, I can't imagine any time that I've been coaching and politics came out of it," he said.

But Brown didn't hold back on politics when asked. He's endorsing fellow Republican Geoff Diehl over Democrat Maura Healey in the Massachusetts governor's race next week. He said Massachusetts wants a "check and balance" for its mostly-Democratic lawmakers.
