BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Federal court documents in Vermont say Nathan Carman has died ahead of his murder trial. The Vernon, Vermont man had been accused of killing his mother on a fishing trip at sea in an inheritance scheme.

Carman was found in an inflatable raft at sea in 2016 and claimed to have been lost at sea. Prosecutors say he really killed his mother and sank their boat, the Chicken Pox, and then lied to his rescuers.

They further accused Carman of killing his wealthy grandfather, John Chakalos, in a scheme to inherit millions of dollars. The 29-year-old pleaded not guilty to murdering his mother in 2022, and also faced fraud charges.

Federal prosecutors did not go into detail about how Carman died, but said U.S. Marshals informed them of his death "on or about" Thursday, June 15.

The federal charges were immediately dismissed.
