MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new study ranks Massachusetts among the worst states in the country for preparing new teachers how to teach children to read in scientifically proven ways.

The study by the National Council on Teacher Quality found Massachusetts ranked 35th for teaching new educators how to instruct students on phonics, vocabulary, and other fundamental components of reading.

The study said among the 19 colleges and universities it evaluated, Gordon College, Worcester State University, and Bay Path University all received A's.

Boston College and the University of Massachusetts-Boston were among the programs that received failing grades.

While some of the schools in the study criticized the report's methodology, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said it was working to help schools improve how they prepare new educators.

WBZ's Jim MacKay (@JimMacKayOnAir) reports.
