Sharing Gift Of Local Music: 'Rock Box' Takes Its Place In Allston

ALLSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Not all that long ago, newspaper vending machines, also known as newspaper racks, stood on just about every street corner in most urban areas.

But with the advent of the internet and electronic publishing, newspaper racks have gone the way of the file cabinet.

There's still some around, but nothing like it used to be.

That said, WBZ's Matt Shearer had a stroke of inspiration when he happened to take a look inside one of the old newspaper racks still standing on a street corner, but many years passed since it was last regularly filled with the day's current news.

Inside the rack was a nicely packaged CD from a local artist. For free.

Matt had the idea to renovate the old rack, and with some help from local artist Nat Reed, turn it into a little free record shop that helps local artists get their music heard.

Matt's renovated 'Rock Box' that is helping people share the gift of local music, has found a home in a park on Franklin Street in Lower Allston.

WBZ's Matt Shearer (@MattWBZ) reports.
