BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Four children were discovered living in squalid conditions after first responders were called to a South Boston apartment for a possible drug overdose.

Authorities say a man in the apartment had gone into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

But the incident over the weekend took a darker turn when four children were discovered in a bedroom ranging in age from 5 to 10 years old living in what first responders described as 'unsanitary' conditions.

Authorities said 'about' six adults who 'appeared to be men' were seen in the apartment at the Old Colony housing projects when first responders arrived.

The men were said to be uncooperative and denied there were children inside the apartment.

One of the adults was reported to be hiding the children from first responders who said they suspected the children were being abused and neglected.

City leaders, like State Senator Nick Collins who represents neighborhoods including South Boston, are calling for a thorough investigation. "No child should be exposed to what these children are alleged to have been exposed to," he said. Boston City Council President Ed Flynn also wants answers. "It's horrific, it's inhumane, it's a house of horrors."
