LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is not meant to be enjoyable.
And it is a necessary evil for students headed to, or already in college, who rely on financial aid because it's the way that the federal government gathers the financial information it needs to determine what loans and grants students qualify for.
The FAFSA needs to be completed each new aid year.
But this year the FAFSA has a new application process that has created even more headaches than usual.
The Dean of Enrollment Management at UMass Lowell, Kerry Johnston, said the new application not only came out with glitches, it also came out late. "There has now been another delay," she said. "Our students rely on financial aid to enroll here at UMass. We made the decision to extend our enrollment deadline from May 1 to June 1."
She also said they may have to move out the deadline again.
The good news? She said once they figure out the glitches, the new FAFSA application is supposed to be easier to fill out.
