BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Wednesday, the city of Boston and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts announced new plans to expand Bluebikes support while certain parts of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority system are closed this spring.
Part of the support program includes free Bluebikes rides for greater Boston residents, who can use up to five free unlocks per user per shutdown.
In a press release on Wednesday, officials said the initiative is “aiming to help people move around the region, and alleviate the impact of rapid transit disruptions.”
The unlocks’ availability began with the Blue Line closure on Wednesday and runs through April 28.
The next window to use the five free Bluebikes unlocks is May 1 through May 8 for the Red Line closure.
Riders can access the free Bluebikes rides on the Bluebikes app with code MBTABLUEAPRIL for the Blue Line closure and code MBTAREDMAY for the Red Line closure.
The unlock codes are available to non-members of Bluebikes, regardless of residency, and can be used at any of the 475 stations across Greater Boston.
The new Bluebikes support plan was unveiled after a similar system was used during the Green Line closure in February.

"We are proud to contribute to the expansion of accessible and sustainable transportation options throughout Greater Boston," said Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross. "We believe that this initiative will not only provide relief to commuters during the MBTA closures but also introduce new users to the numerous benefits of the Bluebikes program."
Blue Cross has been Bluebikes’ title sponsor since 2018 and is “committed to supporting and extending public bike sharing in Greater Boston as a safe and sustainable public transportation option.”
