BEVERLY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Friday is the first day of No-Shave November, which challenges men to ditch the razor for a whole month in an effort to raise awareness for men’s health.
If you plan on participating, a local barber has some important tips on how to make sure that beard stays nice and healthy.
Renee Marchand is the owner of Beard & Mane Barbershop and Beauty Salon in Beverly. The salon is participating in the month-long event for charity.
She said growing out facial hair isn’t too tough, but you have to be willing to put the work in.
“You just have to maintain it and take care of it,” Marchand said.
It’s not unlike getting that regular haircut.
“A lot of the things most men don’t know is if you don’t trim it, it can’t grow, so if you want a long beard, you need to maintain it just like a woman would need to maintain her hair,” Marchand said.
If those participating want a nice, full beard, Marchand said you have to tough it out for a bit before you can reap the rewards.
“If you’re gonna try to grow it out, don’t clean up underneath, I know they say it gets itchy, you can handle it, you'll get over it,” Marchand said. “So that's what’s gonna fill in your beard is everything that's underneath.”
Jack from Salem has a pretty beautiful beard of his own, and his best tip is to listen to the hair care experts in your life.
“Just maintain [your beard] and find an awesome barber like Renee,” Jack said.
