Bear Refuses To Leave Tree In Downtown Northampton, Neighbors Watch

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An unusual bear sighting attracted lots of attention in Northampton on Sunday.

Around 11:30 a.m., Northampton Police made their way to downtown Northampton after hearing reports of a bear in the area.

The bear had climbed up a tree on Gothic Street, near Main Street, and remained there while residents gathered below to see it, police said.

Massachusetts Environmental Police arrived on the scene to help get the bear down and away from the area. Northampton Police said the MEP eventually had to use a tranquilizer dart to get the bear out of the tree since "it showed no signs of leaving."

The bear was relocated to an undisclosed location.
