BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Beloved Boston music journalist Steve Morse has died. His family announced his passing over the weekend.
Morse was a staple to the Boston rock scene, working as a senior rock music critic for the Boston Globe for nearly three decades.
"Words cannot fully express our feelings of loss and deep sorrow at his passing. Truly a remarkable man, Steve touched the lives of everyone whose path he crossed," Morse's family wrote online.
Over the course of his career, he went to 250 concerts a year and interviewed music legends like the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, U2, Pearl Jam, Radiohead and more. Morse devoted his life to the local rock music scene, building a strong bond with his readers.
Morse retired from the Globe in 2006 and spent over a decade teaching students at the Berklee College of Music about rock music though a course he created.
During his career, he contributed to Billboard and Rolling Stones magazines. Morse was inducted into the New England Music Hall of Fame last year.
Morse also brought his love of music to the airwaves. He hosted a radio show "Morse on Music" for WBOS for two years.
He spent the early years of his life in Weymouth before attending Brown University. After graduating from college in 1970, Morse brought his extensive music knowledge to the world of Boston journalism. The Music Museum of New England reported that he focused on country and bluegrass performances when he was first hired as a freelance writer for the Globe. He was brought on as a full-time music critic in 1978 that lasted 28 years.
Morse's family said funeral services will be private, for immediate family only.
Morse was a guest on WBZ's Nightside program in November 2011 talking about his career. Bradley Jay filled in for Dan Rea. You can listen to the interview below.
