BERNARDSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts' new $2.6 million pilot program to install wrong-way detection systems is proving to be a success. The system installed in Bernardston on I-91 northbound and southbound at exit 50 went into action when it detected a driver headed the wrong way on Thursday night.

In a Massachusetts Department of Transportation video shown on WBZ-TV, a driver heading up a ramp in the wrong direction was alerted of their mistake by the wrong-way detection system and was then seen heading in reverse back down the ramp before getting on the correct ramp.

If the car had continued going in the wrong direction, the detection system would have alerted the police and triggered signs along the highway letting other drivers know someone driving in the wrong direction was on the road.

The pilot program will install wrong-way detection systems at 16 ramp locations throughout Massachusetts when the project is complete.
