BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Animal Rescue League of Boston is turning to the public for answers about what happened to a neglected puppy.
Rescuers found the 1-year-old dog, now named Dobby, around Franklin Park in Dorchester in August and originally thought he was a stray. After further investigation of his condition, the ARL's Law Enforcement Department decided to investigate the case as animal cruelty.
When Dobby arrived he weighed just 37 pounds, scoring a 1 out of 9 on the body condition score chart with his ribs showing and no body fat. As rescuers examined, they decided this could be more than just a case of a stray puppy.
"Additionally, Dobby’s fur was urine-stained, presented with mild dental disease, and he also had a number of pressure sores, indicating that he had been kept confined to a small space," the Animal Rescue League of Boston said.

Dobby is receiving treatment at ARL’s Dedham Animal Care in Dedham. Once he is in better shape, he will be heading into foster care.
"Dobby was placed on a refeeding plan, and while he initially lost weight, he is now gaining weight and continuing to make progress. Despite his condition, Dobby knows he is in a safe and caring environment and personifies resilience as has been incredibly friendly and receptive to attention from ARL staff," the ARL said.
Anyone with information about Dobby's condition is asked to contact ARL Law Enforcement at (617) 426-9170 x110 or by emailing cruelty@arlboston.org.
