BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MSPCA is looking for donations to help a small cat get a much needed operation for a broken hip.

Avatar, the one-year-old purebred Ragdoll cat, was brought to Boston's MSPCA Adoption Center last week. MSPCA workers were able to track down Avatar's owners, but found they were unable to provide him with the care he needed.

''This is a really unique situation'', said MSPCA-Angell Director of Adoption Centers and Programs, Mike Keiley. ''The owners wanted what was best for Avatar, so they made the incredibly hard decision to surrender, and they trust us with the responsibility of rehoming him. ''

The next step for the shelter will be to focus on getting Avatar the care he needs.

It is unclear exactly how Avatar sustained his injuries, but workers believe that he may have fallen from a significant height or that an object may have fallen on top of him. The MSPCA needs help to cover the costs of the cat's surgery, which will cost $5,000. Anybody who is interested in donating can click here.

Those who are interested in adopting a cat are encouraged to fill out an adoption inquiry at mspca.org/adopt.
