BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Public Schools announced on Friday they will adopt temporary mask-wearing for eight school days following the winter break. Schools are asking for masks to return temporarily to keep students and staff healthy and help prevent staff absences during the high-risk COVID-19 period following the holidays.
The temporary mask-wearing will be in effect for staff and students from Wednesday, January 4, through Friday, January 13. While mask-wearing is expected, BPS said it is not a mandate. Those who refuse to wear masks will not be disciplined or sent home.
"This is our ask and expectation of students and staff, not a mandate—which will be in effect during the school day on school premises and school buses," BPS wrote on their website.
BPS are asking all students to take an iHealth Antigen Test on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning before returning to school on Wednesday, January 4. They are asking staff to take a test on Tuesday before returning to work as well.

Schools will have masks available for staff and students, as well as iHealth Antigen Test Kits for those who need a test. The testing kits will be accessible in all BPS schools and BPS administrative office buildings. Each kit will have two tests.
Student-athletes will not be expected to wear masks at practices or games, but masks will be made available for those who choose to wear one.
