BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — More than 20 of Boston's best spellers competed in Boston's 15th annual Citywide Spelling Bee on Saturday.

10-year-old Tanoshi Inomata, of Allston, won the competition and will be representing Boston at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.

Inomata correctly spelled the word "Ancho,” beating the competition. 11-year-old Sapna Malhotra, from Boston, came in second place. Third place was tied between 11-year-old Morgan Bocchicchio-Chaudhri, from Dorchester, and 13-year-old Brian Xu, from Roxbury.

“Congratulations to all of our student spellers today and thank you to our City staff who helped make this year’s Bee possible,” Mayor Michelle Wu said in a statement. “This is a beloved tradition that celebrates the special skills of our City’s students. Best of luck to Tanoshi representing Boston in the national spelling bee in Washington DC this May.”

The Scripps National Spelling Bee in D.C. is the largest and longest-running spelling bee in the country, said Boston Centers for Youth & Families.

The last time someone from Massachusetts won the competition was in 1939.
