BROOKLINE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Brookline Police Department wants to educate drivers who violate bicycle lane laws through a new safety initiative.

The Micro-mobility Education Initiative has police officers on bicycles stationed at certain intersections around town.

“There have been some recent concerns about safety issues involving bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, and motorcycles,” said Sgt. Robert Disario in a video posted to the department’s Instagram.

“People cut in and out all the time and they park and it’s bad not just for bikes but other cars,” said Dave Jackson, a Brookline resident and bicyclist said.

Officers will stop and educate those who violate bike lane laws, and issue citations if needed, according to Brookline Police.

“I think if people were more educated, they would probably do a better job of avoiding dangerous situations,” Jackson added.

Some local bicyclists said they've had too many close calls.

“The amount of trucks and cars and Ubers that stop in the bike lane … I can’t count how many times it happens,” said Josh, another Brookline resident.

“It’s biking in Boston … you’re not biking if there’s not a close call," he said.
