PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (WBZ NewsRadio) — A freshman at Brown University made history on Friday when she stepped up to the plate.
Olivia Pichardo, a freshman at Brown University, became the first woman to play in a Division I baseball game on Friday. Pichardo, of Queens, New York, pinch hit in the 9th inning and grounded out in a loss to Bryant University.
Pichardo made history as the first female NCAA Division I baseball student-athlete when she walked on at Brown University in the fall.
"Everyone has been super welcoming, a lot of them reached out to me after the news broke just telling me that they're in my corner and they treat me just like how they would each other," Pichardo said in an interview with ABC News.

19-year-old Pichardo wants other girls who are interested in playing sports traditionally played by men to not be afraid to try.
"You start and stop playing solely on your own terms not because anyone told you otherwise," Pichardo said to ABC News.
