NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Cambridge man brought home the gold for the second year in a row at the 44th annual New Bedford Half Marathon on Sunday.

Matt McDonald, of Cambridge, came in first place with an unofficial time of 1:04:11, just barely beating his winning time last year.

Runners ran the half marathon in cold and windy conditions, as one of their last training stops before competing in the Boston Marathon in April.

"It was designed in the late 70s to be an effective test for your readiness for Boston we're only half the distance but we have a challenging hill at mile three and we have a long slow gradient hill at mile 12," Dan McCarthy, race organizer, told WBZ's Tim Dunn.

"I feel fantastic, I mean this is going to have to be a new Saint Patrick's Day tradition for me," McDonald said. "I'd come back every year for this."

McDonald's girlfriend, Meghan Krifthin, won the woman's race with an unofficial time of 1:12:48.
