BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — An environmental activist group is taking credit for dozens of deflated tires in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood.

The group, Tyre Extinguishers, announced they were responsible for "disarming" 43 SUVs in the name of climate activism in the Beacon Hill area on Wednesday night.

The Tyre Extinguishers called the act their "first action in Boston" to prevent large vehicles from emitting greenhouse gases. The activists said they chose Beacon Hill because it is a wealthy neighborhood in the city.

The group left leaflets on the targeted vehicles to let the owners know why their vehicles were impacted and why they should make the switch to public transportation, biking, or more environmentally friendly vehicles.

Lauren lives on Mount Vernon Street and says her parents were targeted. They discovered their vehicle with deflated tires and a white note when they went outside to move their car for street cleaning.

"I think a lot of people do believe in protecting the environment and making meaningful changes to their lives but forcing on somebody through damaging their property is not the way to go about doing it," said Lauren.

The activists' mission is to "make it impossible to own a huge polluting 4 by 4 in the world's urban areas."

The group stated on their website that they only target large, luxury, gas powered SUVs and that members should avoid electric and hybrid vehicles as well as vehicles clearly used for people with disabilities.
