BOSTON, (WBZ NewsRadio) — Santa's helpers... time is running out. The deadline to adopt a letter to Santa and make a child's Christmas wish come true is just a few days away.
Those who want to participate in the United States Postal Service's Operation Santa have until December 17 to adopt a letter. The USPS program allows anyone to get a gift for a child who might not be able to get one otherwise this Christmas.
Children and families were able to write letters to Santa through the program until December 12.
"If you look at some of these letters these kids aren't asking for Go-karts and mopeds, these kids are asking in some cases for a new pair of shoes for my sister," said Steve Dougherty, with the USPS. "Families write a letter and that letter gets put into our system, they're online where anyone who wants to can pick one up that would like to adopt, you buy the gifts, [and] bring them down to your local post office."

The program gives those adopting a letter a QR code that they bring along with the gift to the post office. The code allows postal workers to address the gift to the right child so it can be delivered to the letter writer safely.
"There are so many kids that if it weren't for a program like this [they] might not have a toy under the tree on Christmas. This gives everyone an opportunity to donate," said Dougherty.
The letters are available for the public to browse on the USPS website. Adopters can choose any letter from the selection and USPS will ship them to kids all around the United States.
