DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The gifts were wrapped... then unwrapped... now where to put the trash?

To help combat post-holiday trash build-up, the town of Dedham is providing additional recycling collection for the two weeks following Christmas.

"So we will double the amount of recycling we get from now for the next two weeks," Joseph Flanagan, public works director of Dedham, said.

Flanagan wants residents to be able to throw away disposable items in the proper bins easily.

"Wrapping paper, that's actually trash, takeaway containers, that's not recyclable that is trash," Flanagan told WBZ's Chris Fama. "[Packing] peanuts are trash, the bubbles that you get in the boxes, those are trash."

He is also reminding residents that foam and Styrofoam are special collection items and do not belong in the trash or recycling. Christmas trees and wreaths have their own disposal as well.

"Check with your community, [in] the town of Dedham we do a curbside collection," Flanagan said.

If your community doesn't have arrangements for Christmas tree pickup, residents can contact the local yard waste management program or donate them to a local farm that has tree drop-off services.
