BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Boston local won big at the 81st edition of the Golden Globes on Sunday night.
Ayo Edebiri, of Dorchester, won best performance by a female actor in a television series, musical, or comedy for her role in the hit show "The Bear."
Joseph Gels, a theater teacher at Boston Latin School, taught Ayo Edebiri more than a decade ago.
"Hilarious all the time both on stage and off stage," Gels described Edebiri to WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe.
He said Edebiri's training in the school's improv troop helped her get to where she is today.
"It was a space where they were allowed to experiment, try things, make mistakes, but also learn from those mistakes and grow in a supportive environment," said Gels.

Current members of Boston Latin's improv troupe, Yellow Submarine Improv Troupe, are proud of Edebiri's accomplishments.
"It's really cool she was in improv and not just an actor," said Salman Uddin, co-captain of the Yellow Submarine Improv Troupe. "And that the skills from improv definitely helped her and I do think improv has such a helpful role in developing your ability to communicate and tell stories."
Edebiri beat out stars like Natasha Lyonne, Quinta Brunson, Elle Fanning, Rachel Brosnahan, and Selena Gomez for the award.
