BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dozens gathered at Pentecostal Church in Lynn on Saturday to donate their blood to those in need.

The Sickle Cell Initiative Blood Drive was the American Red Cross's second blood drive in Lynn.

"I mean I have sickle cell trait so my parents made me aware from a young age what it kind of means so it's also helpful to be able to help out as much as I can and donate my blood to someone eligible for it," Stephen Brown told WBZ's Suzanne Sausville while donating his own blood.

Schuyler Hogan organized the drive after watching his niece suffer from the disease.

"I see her going to the hospital and I see her basically going through all this pain and she's such a little girl I want to do whatever I can to be able to help that," Hogan said.

He told WBZ's Sausville that people with sickle cell need about 100 units of blood a year.

This year the event honored city councilor Gordon “Buzzy” Barton who passed away earlier this month. He assisted in setting up the initial Lynn Sickle Cell Blood Drive last year, American Red Cross said.
