Dozens of Bunnies Taken From Home Now Up For Adoption through MSPCA-Angell

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) The MSPCA-Angell is urging people to adopt dozens of rabbits that were seized from a home in Bristol County.

The organization’s law enforcement team took 44 rabbits away because they were allegedly under unsanitary conditions, according to Mike Keiley, vice president of the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division.

“Despite their previous situation, the rabbits are really sweet,” Keiley said.

The owner officially surrendered the animals earlier this month, and the organization said animal cruelty charges are pending.

The rabbits range in age, with some as young as eight weeks old, and most of them are larger breeds, including Californian, Chinchilla and Rex rabbits. Keiley said larger breeds actually tend to be more docile than smaller breeds.

The organization said it hopes the time of year will encourage adoption, as lots of people might want their own Easter bunny.

“People who are considering getting a rabbit often think about doing so now, just given the season, and there’s no shame in that,” Keiley said. “We want people to come in and adopt because they’ll still talk to an adoption counselor to see if a rabbit is a good fit for their family, and we don’t see them being surrendered at higher rates.”

All of the rabbits will have to be spayed or neutered if they’re adopted, the organization said. The rabbits will be available at the MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center in Boston, MSPCA at Nevins Farm in Methuen and the MSPCA Cape Cod Adoption Center in Barnstable.
