SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dozens of cats will soon be up for adoption at the MSPCA and the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem after almost 50 were rescued over the weekend.
On Saturday, 47 cats arrived at the New Bedford Regional Airport after being transported from the SPCA of Texas. The MSPCA said the Texas shelter was overrun with pets as it is a busy time for animal intake in the South as the weather begins to shift.
The newly arrived cats' ages range from six months old to eight years old and have short, medium, and long hair varieties.

“This transport comes at a critical time for the South,” Jamie Garabedian, Northeast Animal Shelter assistant director of operations, said in a statement. “As the weather gets warmer, shelters will likely see an increase in how many cats and kittens come in, so it’s important to free up some space there, while getting these cats here where we’re confident they’ll find new loving homes.”
The cats are in Salem completing a state-mandated 48-hour quarantine before they are able to be adopted at the Northeast Animal Shelter.
