DENNIS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio— Two people and a dog are dead after a fire broke out in a Dennis home early Sunday morning.

Just before 7 a.m., Dennis firefighters got reports of smoke coming from a two-story duplex at 3 Niblick Road. When crews arrived, they found a man, a woman, and a dog inside the home. The pair were transported to Cape Cod Hospital but later succumbed to their injuries, Dennis Fire Department said. The dog also did not survive the fire.

The man and womans' identities are not being released at this time, officials said.

It is unknown how the fire began at this time. Dennis Fire Chief Robert Brown is reminding residents to check that their fire alarms are installed and working.

“It’s too early to say how the fire started, but we know there were no working smoke alarms in the unit where it began,” Chief Brown said in a statement. “Please check your smoke alarms today to be sure they’re working properly on every level of your home.”

Dennis Fire Department, Dennis Police Department, and State Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
