BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — When you were a kid and had an upset stomach your mother may have told you to drink some ginger ale to sooth it. One Boston dietician says that's actually not the case.

WBZ NewsRadio's Kyle Bray went to confront his own mom and seek out the truth.

Lisa Taylor, a dietician at Mass General Brigham, said it is true that ginger can help settle your stomach, but sugar can actually make a stomach ache worse.

"Most of the popular ginger ale brands contain a lot of added sugar and very little real ginger, mostly it's just flavoring," Taylor said.

Taylor said a good alternative is ginger tea. You can buy it in the store or make your own and add some other ingredients that may sooth your stomach.

"You can add cinnamon which also helps to settle you stomach and I like to add orange for a little bit of natural sweetness," she said.
