HOPKINTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hopkinton town officials are preparing to welcome runners at the starting line for the 127th Boston Marathon on Monday. Officials are asking those traveling to Hopkinton to be aware of road closures for the marathon.

Each year, thousands of runners from around the world head to Hopkinton to kick off the iconic marathon. The Hopkinton community plays a big role in making sure the marathon kicks off smoothly each year. The Hopkinton Marathon Committee organizes thousands of starting line volunteers while the Department of Public Works ensures the roads are ready and safe for runners.

“This year’s Marathon holds a heaviness in my heart as it does for many of you with it being the 10-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing. 10 years ago the community came together with grit and strength to show that we are unbreakable, and in the years since that hasn’t wavered,” Town Manager Norman Khumalo said in a statement. “I’m grateful and honored to say that even though this year’s Marathon comes with a solemn tone, 10 years later we are still that strong-spirited community that will kick off this year’s race alongside all of our runners, spectators and visitors.”

All roads leading to the downtown Hopkinton area will be closed for travel on Monday. Roads immediately surrounding the Hopkinton Town Common will be closed to traffic at 6:30 a.m. Other main roads in the area will be closed at 7 a.m.
