CUSHING, Maine (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Maine lobsterman was out catching lobsters earlier this week when he pulled up something rather unusual.

A lobsterman based out of Cushing was about 20 miles off the shore on Tuesday morning when he pulled up an approximately 5-foot-long military rocket, Maine State Police said. The man brought the rocket to the shore and contacted official the next day.

Commander Pescitelli and Bomb Technician Keith Barton identified the military rocket as a MK29 Mod-0.

"With x-ray imaging, the technicians were unable to confirm that the item did not contain explosive material. Due to its condition, the decision was made to countercharge the item with the guidance from Navy EOD Mobile Unit 12," said Maine State Police.

Officials said the rocket was rendered safe and disposed of it with help from the South Thomaston Fire Department.
