BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) - One man's trash is another man's treasure. Or in this case, one man's traffic cone is another man's musical instrument?
WBZ's Matt Shearer set out for a grocery store jam session with Wenzl Mcgowen, also known as Traffic Cone Sax Man.
Mcgowen plays a baritone saxophone with a twist... an orange traffic cone sticks out the top giving it an interesting look and much more interesting sound. He invited the traffic cone saxophone to give the instrument more base. The long tubular traffic cone allows the notes to get much lower than the typical sounds of a saxophone.
Playing the instrument has become a passion of Mcgowen's.
"My first girlfriend left me because she asked me "what do you love more your saxophone or me?"' he said with his saxophone in hand.
Mcgowen plays his amped up instrument in public with a mission... to forget about the woes of everyday life and live in the moment.
"I'm just trying to bring in some randomness that makes people think oh wait maybe this isn't all so set in-stone," Mcgowen said.
He has played in many different public places in Boston. In addition to playing in grocery stores, he has also played in a Chipotle and his girlfriend's yoga class.
When he's not being kicked out of stores, he plays in the band, Moon Hooch.
