Massachusetts Casinos To Close Over Coronavirus Concerns

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio)— The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has voted to temporarily suspend operation at the state’s three casino properties; Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino.

In a press release Saturday morning, the Gaming Commission said the unanimous decision "was made in collaboration and cooperation with our licensees to safeguard the health and well-being of casino guests, employees, and regulators..... in response to the coronavirus pandemic."

The closures are slated to go into effect at all three casinos at 5:59am on Sunday March 15.

According to the Gaming Commission, the decision will be "re-assessed in two weeks, while an orderly shutdown process is actively underway."

This follows Gov. Baker's emergency order to prohibit the gathering of more than 250 people, as the coronavirus continues to spread across the state.
