BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The date is set for sports betters but what about a time? The Massachusetts Gaming Commission announced on Friday those who wish to place a bet can show up at casinos in Massachusetts starting at 10 A.M. on January 31 to make their first legal sports bets in the state.
Earlier this month, MGC announced retail sports wagering at Category 1 licensees will launch at the end of the month. The Gaming Commission had decided that the end of January was the set start date, but hadn't chosen a specific time until Friday.
The commission warns there are still some legal obstacles they need to get through before legal betting can commence.

"The expectation is that sometime next week the operations certificate, approval before the commission, they will hopefully get approval if everything goes well, and then a launch date for the Category 1 casino properties on the 31st," said Karen Wells, executive director of the Massachusetts Gaming Committee said in the meeting.
Once the operations certificate is approved, bets can be placed at Plainridge Park in Plainville, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor in Everett.
