METHUEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MSPCA at Nevins Farm was able to find homes for 10 horses in two days after a large rescue effort left the farm with almost 20 new horses in need of homes and medical attention.

18 new horses arrived at Nevins Farm in Methuen this week after they were surrendered from a farm in Alford, Massachusetts. The horses' former owners are under investigation for animal cruelty.

The rescue effort was a huge undertaking for farm staff as many of the horses have respiratory illnesses and need to be quarantined. They had 48 hours to find new homes and foster care for the 10 animals already living in the barn to make room for the horses.

Mike Keiley, the head of the MSPCA-Angell's adoption center, said in his 28 years there he has never seen something like this.

Head of the organization's adoption center "Given the challenges with their individual medical needs and the contagious disease issue I can't think of a case like this in my time here at the MSPCA," Keiley told WBZ's Kendall Buhl. "So it's been a unique challenge, we're standing up to it, but we certainly need all the help we can get."

MSPCA staff are working to get the horses settled in and healthy so they can find their forever homes.

"[We're] just giving them the opportunity to decompress right now and then start to get a sense of who their individual personalities are and I think we're going to see a spectrum of easy to difficult horses, we will be looking for people who will be able to take these animals on and give them a great life" Keiley said.

The rescue is accepting donations online.
