RUTLAND, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) — Rutland parents and students had a surprise visitor on the car drop-off line on Monday morning.

A moose was seen wandering around Naquag Elementary School and peeping into classroom windows when students were being dropped off at school on Monday, Rutland Police said.

The moose walked around the cars lined up and the school parking lot before leaving the area. A neighbor saw the moose roaming around their backyard shortly after.

Rutland Police did remind residents not to approach a moose if they do see one.

"Never try to approach or pursue a moose. Pursuit not only stresses the animal, but it adds the risk of having a moose chased out into traffic or into a group of bystanders. Wildlife professionals recommend letting the moose find its way out of populated areas and into nearby forested areas," the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife wrote on the official website of Massachusetts.
