ROCKLAND, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — There is one South Shore salon dedicated to dreadlocks and nothing else.

Alberte Fernelus decided to turn her passion into a career and open a specialty salon devoted entirely to dreading hair. In 2019, Fernelus opened the Dreadguru Salon in Rockland on 331 Centre Avenue.

Alberte Fernelus got the name "Dread Guru" from her children who gave her the nickname when business started to pick up.

"It was a hobby for me and I turned it into a business and I enjoy doing that," Fernelus said.

She said having deadlocks is healthier for hair since it doesn't use harsh chemicals.

Fernelus said she will dread anyone's hair and has several Caucasian clients. On straight, fine hair, she uses a crochet needle to crochet the hair.

"I don't discriminate, anyone that wants dreads it doesn't matter what culture you are your welcome to come here and I will dread your hair," Fernelus said.

One Randolph woman got dreads for the first time at Dreadguru Salon. She said her Haitian family looks down upon having dreadlocks, but she is trying to change that.

"So we're trying to change that stigma, especially in 2023," Anne Marie said. "I feel like a lot more Black people are locking their hair and their showing all the different styles."

One man named Tim has been going to the salon since it opened. He said dreadlocks are more than a style, but a way to express his Jamaican heritage.
