Plum Island Residents Ask For Stricter Social Distancing

PLUM ISLAND, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Residents of Plum Island in Essex County are asking for stricter enforcement after visitors came in large groups and ignored the beach parking lot closures.

Tarah Cammett organized the petition after seeing the heavy pedestrian traffic from visitors, especially on the weekends.

"They created their own parking lots outside of the barriers," Cammett said. "Getting off in groups, not socially distancing, not wearing masks."

The petition asked Newburyport Police for better parking lot barriers, stronger signage, and stricter enforcement of the parking barriers.

"Many of us in the community called the police, we sent notes to the mayor, limited to no response so I just felt like I had to take action," Cammett said.

Cammett's petition received over 630 signatures from residents.
