Quincy Mayor Unveils Statue Of America's Second First Lady Abigail Adams

QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Many gathered Saturday morning for the unveiling of a statue remembering America's second first lady.

A 7-foot tall bronze statue of Abigail Adams was revealed on the Hancock Adams Common at the statue dedication ceremony in Quincy. Abigail Adams was the first woman to serve as Second Lady of the United States and the second woman to serve as First Lady.

"We're thrilled we have a beautiful day here, we have a nice turnout and it's Abigail's day and we're very excited about it," Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch said at the ceremony.

Mayor Koch called Abigail Adams the most important woman of her generation. Standing by John Adams' side, she spoke out against slavery and advocated for women's education and equal access to public education. She was also the mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States.

"This is huge I mean it's another piece, another major piece, we still have a ways to go, we gotta get to John Quincy Adams the sixth president, but having Abigail done really fills in that historic piece of the puzzle in the Hancock Adams Common," Mayor Koch said.

Abigail Smith was born in Weymouth in 1744. She married John Adams in 1764 when she was 20 years old.

The statue signifies her contribution to the nation's history.
