BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds of Bostonians received free smoke alarms in the name of fire safety on Saturday.

200 Boston residents got new smoke alarms and CO detectors installed free of charge thanks to The Red Cross' Sound the Alarm event.

"Most of the appointments that we have are in Dorchester and Roxbury, these are areas that are vulnerable to fire," said Red Cross Massachusetts Spokesperson Kelly Isenor.

200 volunteers are working with the Boston Fire Department to install them in homes around the city.

The event also provided specialized alarms for those in need.

"For families who are hard of hearing we provide bed shaker alarms so that in addition to the siren you have this movement so that can wake you up," said Isenor.

Volunteers also helped residents come up with a fire escape route in the event of an emergency. They sat down with Bostonians to come up with a two-minute plan of what to do and where to meet in the unlikely event something happened and they needed to evacuate.

Ingram said she's always paranoid about fires and didn't want to pass up the opportunity.

"I mean why not? I mean it's nice you're going to send them free, I mean I'm a tenant I'm not the landlord so it's not my responsibility, I have them but to get new ones why not?" she said.

Red Cross supplied and installed the alarms with financial help from National Grid.
