18-Year-Old Charged In Hit-And-Run That Seriously Injured Child In Yarmouth

YARMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An 18-year-old man is out on bail after Yarmouth Police arrested him on charges in connection to a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured an eight-year-old child earlier this month.

Police arrested Jakob Gifford of Marstons Mills on Saturday, Aug. 27 in connection to the accident, he was arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Monday and posted $2,500 bail under the condition he does not drive any motor vehicle and surrenders his license. Gifford is facing several charges including leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury, negligent driving, and withholding evidence.

Gifford allegedly struck the eight-year-old while the child was riding a scooter with his two siblings and his grandmother down Higgins Crowell Road in Yarmouth on Saturday, Aug. 20. The boy was taken to the Cape Cod Hospital and then flown to a hospital in Boston with serious injuries.

The boy has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home with his family. Yarmouth Police said the boy will likely need to have more medical procedures at some point in the future.

Gifford will return to court on Oct. 25 for a probable cause hearing.
