19 Rescued After Getting Stuck on Southwick Zoo's Skyfari Ride

MENDON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — 19 people were rescued after being stuck on the Skyfari Sky Ride at Southwick's Zoo Friday afternoon.

The Skyfari operates as a chair lift that gives riders an aerial view of the zoo's exhibits and animals.

Passengers were trapped on the ride for over an hour before they could be rescued. Once first responders from the Mendon Fire Department arrived, it took over 30 minutes before all of the passengers—12 adults and seven children—were successfully saved.

Zoo management said a small oil leak was the cause of the issue, forcing them to stop the ride immediately.

Temperatures at the time were in the mid-80s.
