BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — History and modernity have come together in an East Boston firehouse from the mid-1800s which has been renovated into two modern condominiums.

The firehouse, located at 64 Marion St., became the location for Engine Company 5 on September 1, 1860, and Engine 5 remained there until 1938 when they moved to 360 Saratoga St., which is where they are today.

The building was later sold and has been renovated into condominiums while preserving some elements of the old firehouse.

Brothers Patrick and Doug Miller of Compass Real Estate discussed the property's unusual historical details.

The outside still has the classic firehouse look with large, bright red wooden garage doors.

Patrick Miller explained that the renovation did “a wonderful job preserving a lot of the character of the façade of the building while making this a very functional residence.”

The building “was at one point just a one-bay firehouse and then it was added onto for the second bay,” said Doug Miller.

Doug added that the property has been updated to include many modern amenities, including a roof deck, open spaces, and high ceilings.

The property’s history and original details are also selling points.

“The fire pole is probably the most fun, and then another interesting one is the holding cell that is still down in the basement [and] that would make a wonderful wine cellar,” said Doug.

Patrick also emphasized the novelty of the fire pole. “I think every kid wants to slide down a fire pole at some point in their lives.”

Both condominium units are on sale together for $3.5 million.
