WINCHENDON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- First responders are being praised for their quick thinking, as a man was rescued from the roof of his sinking car Sunday.
The car had plunged into Hunts Pond off Spring Street around 4 a.m. landing in about in 8 to 10 feet of water about 10 feet from the shore.
A passerby plowing a parking lot in a nearby church, witnessed the vehicle go off the road into the pond and called police.
The driver managed to pull himself out and climb onto the roof of the car.
Because the car was quickly sinking before a ladder truck from the fire department could get there, first responders grabbed a rope and threw it to the man who tied it around himself.
A combination of police, fire, ems and DPW crews helped to safely pull the man to shore.
The driver was not injured.
