Families Displaced By Fire In Somerville

SOMERVILLE, MA (WBZ-AM) --  Several families are looking for a new place to live after a fire forced them out of their home on the coldest night of the year.

Fire crews were called the multi-family building at 15 Connecticut Avenue shortly before midnight on Thursday Officials have determined the fire started on a 3rd floor back-porch.

5 adults and 2 children were safely evacuated, the Red Cross helping them find temporary shelter.

District Chief Frank Lee tells WBZ NewsRadio1030's Kim Tunnicliffe that narrow streets and water turning quickly to ice made this a tough fire to fight through the early morning hours Friday.

"Very narrow streets to get the apparatus down the street. very very tight to get in there. Eventually once we started to flowing water, everything turned to ice," he said.

Several firefighters slipped and fell but no serious injuries.

Officials estimate the damages to be around $500,000 thousand-dollars.
