A Singing Sensation In An Unlikely Place

WATERTOWN, MA (WBA-AM) -- When Russo's Market in Watertown decided to hire professional carolers for the holidays owner Tony Russo didn't realize the star of the show would become one of his own employees.

Guilherme Assuncao sang professionally as a child in Brazil but figured studying computers was more practical than pursuing his dream.

The is young Brazilian immigrant trying to work his way thru college stepped up to the mic and amazed his co-workers at the audience.

A fellow co-worker recently played an old you tube video for Russo and he asked the performers scheduled for last weekend if Assuncao could join them.

“I knew he could sing but I didn’t know how well he could sing. Clearly he’s exceptional,” Russo said.

Albeit in the produce aisle, Assuncao says the experience is reviving old dreams.

“I dreamt for so long about being a professional singer like having my own music but I know it’s a really hard path to follow, so even do I dream about it, I have my feet on the ground.”

Assuncao says he would love to sing professionally again perhaps the Phantom of The Opera. It's what he used to sing when he lived in Brazil.

WBZ NewsRadio1030's Lana Jones reports.
